Super bowl NFL O'Sullivans

In February, the Super Bowl 2025 will bring American football fans together all around the world. When is the Super Bowl kickoff? Who is performing at the Super Bowl halftime show? And what is the Super Bowl in simple terms?

The Super Bowl, also called the Big Game, is the NFL’s final game. It’s one of the major sporting events in professional football, and O’Sullivans wouldn’t miss it!

On average, over 123 million persons watch the Big Game. And even more viewers tune in to watch the Super Bowl halftime show.

Since 2021, the Super Bowl has taken place on the second Sunday in February: this day is called the Super Bowl Sunday. It’s an unofficial bank holiday in the United States of America. Family and friends gather together to watch the NFL final game at home or in restaurants, bars and pubs. You’ll often find finger food and drinks at these pregame parties: chicken wings, pizza, chips, burgers… and beer!

For the occasion, at O’Sullivans, we don’t just broadcast the Super Bowl live on 4k screens. We also organise DJ sets and live music sessions, among other surprises…

History of the NFL Super Bowl

An American football championship

The NFL championship, or National Football League championship, was created in 1967. This major sporting event is organised every year in the US.

The NFL championship rules have changed a lot over the years. But this is how it works now.

The National Football League consists of 32 teams, split between two conferences: 16 teams from the AFC (American Football Conference) and 16 teams from the NFC (National Football Conference). Each conference is divided into four divisions (East, North, South, West) of four American football teams.

Some of the most famous NFL teams are the New York Jets, the Dallas Cowboys, the Philadelphia Eagles, the New Orleans Saints, or the San Francisco 49ers. And, of course, the Kansas City Chiefs, who won the last two Super Bowl games.

Each NFL season consists of:
• NFL Preseason (three weeks of exhibition matches).
• NFL Regular Season (272 American football matches are disputed during 18 weeks).
• NFL Playoffs (a 14-team single-elimination tournament).
• Super Bowl (the big final game).

At the end of the NFL championship, the Super Bowl MVP (most valued player) is selected. Tom Brady is the player who has won the most Super Bowl MVP awards (five), followed by Joe Montana (three) and Patrick Mahomes (three).

NFL playoffs

The NFL playoffs are followed by millions of American football fans; at the end of the NFL playoffs, we’ll know which two teams will compete at the Super Bowl 2025.

It’s a single-elimination tournament where 14 teams compete against each other. The number of teams competing during the NFL playoffs has changed over the years. From 1967, they were 4 teams; from 1970, they were 8 teams; from 1978, they were 10; 12 teams from 1990; and 14 teams from 2020.

For the NFL’s 2024/2025 season, there will be 14 teams competing in the NFL playoffs: 7 teams from the NFC and 7 teams from the AFC. 2025 NFL playoffs will start on Saturday, January 11th, at 19:00 (Paris time).

NFL playoffs are organised in three rounds:
• Wild Card round.
• Divisional round.
• NFL conference championship games.

On January 26th, we’ll know the names of the best NFL teams for the NFL’s 2024-2025 season. These two American football clubs will compete against each other in the Super Bowl (final game) on February 9, 2025 (ET time), in New Orleans.

Super Bowl halftime shows

From marching bands…

Super Bowl halftime shows were not as impressive as the ones you have watched in recent years. During the first Super Bowl halftime show, in 1967, the University of Arizona and Grambling State University marching bands were performing.

At that time, Super Bowl halftime shows were created to entertain fans during the halftime break. The performances were quite simple, and showcased university marching bands and local talents, such as Al Hirst, a trumpeter and bandleader from Louisiana.

The musical aspect of the Super Bowl halftime shows was already important for the NFL final organisers and American football fans.

Halftime performances slowly became more and more complex and sophisticated. For example, in 1989, television viewers were able to enjoy an innovative show with the Coca Cola’s 3D glasses experience, wearing special 3D glasses at home.

…to the King of Pop

Michael Jackson’s performance at the Super Bowl halftime show, in 1993, marked the beginning of a new era.

From this moment, the Super Bowl halftime show became as important as the NFL’s final game. Each year, some of the world’s greatest music artists perform at the Super Bowl halftime show: Prince, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, U2…

In 2024, about 210 million persons watched the Super Bowl Halftime Show, at home or in a bar.

Super Bowl 2025 halftime show

In 2025, the Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show will be performed by Kendrick Lamar.

The 2025 headline performer has already performed at the Super Bowl. On February 13, 2022, Kendrick Lamar shared the Super Bowl halftime stage with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, 50 Cent and Anderson .Paak.

Like most of the Super Bowl halftime shows, the 2025 performance should be spectacular and entertaining.
